Walk to the lake

After taking the kids on two walks outside in January and I believe ZERO in all of February, I was getting pretty stir crazy by the time March rolled around. Thankfully, at the tail end of February through the beginning of March, we were able to string together enough days with highs in the 30s for the icy sidewalks to begin to melt, so that it wasn't quite so hazardous to venture out with an intrepid three-year-old and a baby in tow. We celebrated the thaw the weekend after the beginning of "meteorological spring" (March 1) by taking our first family walk down to the lake in 2013.

Of course, this being Minnesota, on the two days after these pictures were taken we had one of our biggest snowstorms of the winter. Ah, well -- at least at this point we know the snow can't last much longer!

Leif's third birthday

Leif had two very fun celebrations of his third birthday in late February. First, the weekend before his birthday, we had a party at our house with all of the usual suspects (Grandma and Grandpa B., Auntie Mirja, Gock and Grandpaw G., Auntie Sarah, Erik, Tami, and Vivian). Leif was in high spirits throughout the party and had a grand time playing with everyone and opening his presents. At Leif's request, we had "plain chocolate cake," which he helped me mix up the morning of the party. Here's my cake decorating effort (pretty fancy, eh?):

On Leif's actual birthday, Aaron took the day off from work so we could trek up to the Eagle's Nest indoor playground in New Brighton, then over to downtown St. Paul to have an early dinner at Cossetta's. We don't often take the kids out to eat these days, since it's a bit of a production, but they have both been to Cossetta's a number of times and it seems to work pretty well, as long as we get there extremely early (like 4:30) to avoid the long lines. Leif is a big fan of both their pizza and their chocolate-covered cannoli, so eating there seemed like an appropriate treat for his big day!

Here are some more pictures Aaron took during the party at our house:
